Dr. Jacob I. Melamed

Dr. Jacob Melamed is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Bethesda, Maryland.  He provides general psychotherapy services to individuals and couples.  He has a specialty in the treatment of addictions.  He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and completed his clinical internship at the Washington, D. C. Veterans Administration Medical Center.  Dr. Melamed is licensed in the state of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Clinically, Dr. Melamed has found his calling working with adults to overcome addictive disorders.   He holds certification in the treatment of alcohol and psychoactive substance use disorders by College of Professional Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He is a sought-after expert.  He has provided consultation services to both outpatient and residential treatment programs.  Dr. Melamed was appointed by the governor to serve on the Maryland Drug Treatment Task force.  He has provided clinical consultation to uniformed counselors providing evaluation and treatment services to Marine Corps personnel at Quantico.  Dr.  Melamed has provided expert testimony before courts in the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia in criminal cases (competency, murder, sexual assault) in which alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, PCP or other drugs of abuse were a significant factor.  He has served as an expert witness on behalf of a sober housing program in a zoning dispute.

Dr. Melamed holds a post-doctoral master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology from Fairleigh Dickinson University.  He is committed to using his psychopharmacology training to promote informed understanding of the real benefits of the medications that are used to treat addictive disorders and mental illnesses .  He is concerned with helping each patient to make an informed decision about the potential benefits as well as possible risks of medications as it applies to each patient’s unique circumstances.  Dr. Melamed has incorporated this knowledge into his general therapy practice.

Dr. Melamed’s decision to pursue advanced training in psychopharmacology came out of his work with patients who are “dually diagnosed."  These are individuals who have an addictive disorder and simultaneously have another mental health condition such as depression, anxiety disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder.  Dr. Melamed has delivered presentations at training seminars and professional conferences on psychopharmacology for therapists and effectively integrating medication in the treatment of “dually diagnosed” patients.

As part of his general practice, Dr. Melamed works with individuals and couples.  In individual psychotherapy, in addition to alcohol and substance use disorders, Dr. Melamed treats depression/mood disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues and stage-of-life issues.  In couples treatment, Dr. Melamed works with chronic conflict, infidelity, and the effects of addiction on the couple.  Dr. Melamed has been recognized by Washingtonian Magazine as a couples therapist recommended by his peers and prominent divorce attorneys.
